Love Libraries

About Love Libraries:

Love Libraries is a campaign to get everyone excited about what public libraries have to offer. With millions of free books, newspapers, CDs, DVDs, audio tapes, internet terminals, author events, reading groups and much much more, libraries have something to offer for everyone!

We want to raise awareness of all the great things available in libraries. We want to widen the appeal of libraries to people across the country. We want to involve people in changing and improving their library service.

Help us spread the word about how fantastic libraries are by becoming a Love Libraries Champion

“I love the serendipity of libraries – I never know what I am going to find out about, or what will catch my eye”
Library Champion

“I have a young baby, and going to the library is a fantastic way to get out, meet other people, and all for free!”
Library Champion

We have over 500 champions of all ages, and over 50 celebrity supporters from JK Rowling to the Hairy Bikers supporting our campaign.

“I love libraries because there’s still a wonderfully varied selection of books and all the librarians are so knowledgeable and helpful.”
Jacqueline Wilson

“Libraries have always been a part of the fabric of my life. The library taught me the value of being carried away into other worlds and others’ ideas.”
Tracey Chevalier

“I strongly support this campaign. There is no substitute for books and reading. They can enhance the lives of everyone, and they should not depend on having money.”
John Sergeant

Background

The Love Libraries campaign was launched in March 2006, and kick started by Reading Partners; a consortium of The Reading Agency and nine British Publishers; who joined up with the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Society of Chief Librarians to form the Future Libraries Partnership.

As part of the first stage of the campaign, three libraries (Kent, Cornwall and Richmond) were dramatically transformed over a period of twelve weeks. The libraries were refurbished and new services introduced to attract more people in the community.
