“One thing happened in my late teens that made me realise that libraries are cool: Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The library is a dynamic working environment. New things happen all the time. I’m encouraged to be innovative, to explore new ideas and to try new services using emerging technologies.”
Winning the award was great for me and my employers. I think it recognised the lengths we’re going to in order to innovate and develop new services, as well as new ways of providing the old services we all know and love. And being featured in the local paper has its perks: fame! Well, for a couple of days at least.
The award has opened up other opportunities up as well. We have participated in podcasts, which have been great fun, and I’ve learned a lot about the things the other Young Librarians are passionate about. One of the best outcomes for me has been the ability to share ideas with the rest of the group. We’re a pretty diverse bunch, covering just about every aspect of library service provision between us, and I hope we can continue to work together like this.
Finally, I’ve learned a valuable lesson: I will be known as “the one who likes Giles off Buffy the Vampire Slayer” for the rest of my life. I’m not sure whether this is a good thing or not!
